Term | Definition |
Nutrition | The process by which the body takes in and uses food. |
Nutrients | substances in food that your body needs to grow, repair itself, tosupply you with energy |
Saturated fats | Animal fat and tropical oils–too much consumption highly increases risk of heart disease |
Unsaturated fats | Vegetable oil – reduces risk of heart disease in moderation. Poly-unsaturated and Mono-unsaturated |
Trans fatty acids | hydrogenation (making unsaturated fat firm by adding more hydrogen atoms), used in processed foods, increases risk of heart disease. |
Proteins | Are amino acids that help build and maintain body cells and tissues. |
Carbohydrates | Are starches and sugars present in foods (main source of energy). |
Vitamins | Elements that help regulate many body functions. |
Minerals | Elements that are not manufactured by the body but help to regulate many body functions |
Water | Vital to every body function (need at least 8 cups a day) |
