Term | Definition |
Heredity | The passing of traits from parents to their offspring. |
Genetics | The study of heredity. |
Allele | An alternative form of a gene. |
Punnett Square | A diagram used to predict the outcome of a genetic cross. |
Gene | A segment of DNA that controls a trait. |
Dominant allele | The allele that is expressed in an organism. |
Recessive allele | The allele that is hidden by the dominant gene or not expressed. |
Genotype | An organism's combination of genes for a trait. |
Phenotype | An organism's physical appearance or characteristics as a result of its combination of genes. |
Law of Independent Assortment | The pairs of genes separate independently of one another. |
Law of Segregation | The pair of alleles for a trait will separate when gametes are formed; so that each gamete will have a random allele. |
Homozygous | An individual that has two alleles that are the same for a particular trait. |
Heterozygous | An individual that has two alleles that are different for a particular trait. |
