Term | Definition |
petals | brightly colored, to attract insects such as bees, for pollination |
sepals | external, protective covering of the flower bud |
stamen | male part of the flower, made up of the anther and filament |
anther | in seed plants, the part that produces pollen which is carried from flower to flower, and is part of the stamen |
pistil | female parts of the flower consisting of the stigma, syle, and ovary |
ovary | in seed plants, the female reproductive part that produces the egg |
fertilization | the union of male pollen and female ovules to create seeds |
reproduction | the production of new individuals or offspring in plants |
pollination | the act of transferring pollen grains from the male anther of a flower to the female stigma |
epidermis | a single layer of cells that covers the leaves, flowers, roots and stems of plants. It forms a boundary between the plant and the external environment. |
stomata | the tiny openings in the epidermis of a plant, through which gases and water vapor pass. Permits the absorption of carbon dioxide necessary for photosynthesis from the air, as well as the removal of excess oxygen. |
guard cell | each of a pair of curved cells that surround stomata. They open and close the stomata. |
glucose | a sugar produced in plants during photosynthesis |
photosynthesis | the process by which green plants use sunlight to make glucose from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants involves the green pigment chlorophyll and produces oxygen |
respiration | The opposite of photosynthesis. During respiration, plants absorb oxygen and use them to create water, carbon dioxide, and energy, which helps the plant grow. |
transpiration | Transpiration is the process where plants absorb water through the roots and then give off water vapor through pores in their leaves. |
cholorophyll | a green pigment, present in all green plants, responsible for the absorption of light to provide energy for photosynthesis. |
tropism | the response of an organism, esp a plant, to an external stimulus by growth in a direction determined by the stimulus like water or sunlight |
stimulus | something that provokes a response in a plant, such as sunlight or water |
filament | supports the anther to make it accessible to insects |
stigma | sticky portion at the top of the style wherenthe pollen grains usually land |
style | part of the pistil, between the ovary and stigma, that transports pollen to the ovary |
ovule | the female egg in the plant |
