Pattern Recognition | Automatic retrieval of information from a well structured knowledge base. |
Forward Reasoning | Data analysis results in hypothesis generation or diagnosis, utilizing a sound knowledge base. Is more likely to occur in familiar cases with experienced clinicians. |
Evidence Based Medicine | Conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients. |
Red Flags - Neurological | Changes in hearing; Frequent or severe headaches with no history of injury; problems with swallowing or changes in speech; changes in vision; Problems with balance, coordination or falling; Faint spells (drop attacks); sudden weakness |
Expert | Someone widely recognized as a reliable source of technique or skill whose faculty for judging or deciding rightly, justly, or wisely is accorded authority and status by their peers or the public in a specific well-distinguished domain. |
Clinical Practice Guidelines | Documented with the aim of guiding decisions and criteria regarding diagnosis, management, and treatment in specific areas of healthcare. |
Expressed Consent | The patient has the procedure explained to him/her, understands and agrees to it. |
Implied Consent | The patient is unable to communicate his/her consent, but life-saving interventions are required. |
Third Party Consent | The patient is mentally incapable of understanding the procedure and/or the ramifications of consent or refusal. Consent is given or witheld on his/her behalf by a legal designate. |
Red Flags | Are warning signs and symptoms that indicate that a problem is not musculoskeletal in nature and is a more serious problem that should be referred to the appropriate healthcare professional. |
Red Flags - Cancer | Persistent pain at night; constant pain anywhere in the body; unexplained weight loss (10-15lbs in 2 weeks or less); loss of appetite; unusual lumps or growths; unwarranted fatigue. |
Red Flags - Cardiovascular | Shortness of breath; dizziness; pain or feeling of heaviness in the chest; pulsing pain anywhere in the body; constant and severe pain in the lower leg (calf) or arm; discoloured or painful feet; swelling (no history of injury) |
Red Flags - Gastrointestinal | Frequent or severe abdominal pain; frequent heartburn or indigestion; frequent nausea or vomiting; change in or problems with bowel or bladder function (urinary tract infection); unusual menstrual irregularities |
Red Flags - Miscellaneous | Fever or night sweats; recent severe emotional disturbances; swelling or redness in any joint with no history of injury; pregnancy |
