Term | Definition |
Monera | Kingdom including organisms lacking a membrane separating its genetic material from its cytoplasm |
Animal | Multi cellular organisms that are heterotrophic |
Prokaryotic | Simple, single celled organisms with no defined nucleus or organelles |
Eukaryotic | Cells with a membrane enclosed nucleus and organelles |
Dichotomous Key | A tool allowing one to determine the identity of organisms; the key consists of a series of questions concerning physical characteristics that lead the user to the correct name of an organism |
Fungi | Eukaryotic, multi-cellular organisms that do not make their own food, including yeasts, molds, and mushrooms |
Plant | Multi cellular autotrophic organisms; they are divided into phylum by whether or not they have true roots and stems |
Binomial Nomenclature | The two word system used to name organisms, with the first word being the genus and the second being the species |
Bacteria | Unicellular organisms lacking a nucleus that can be autotrophs or heterotrophs |
Protist | Unicellular or multi cellular organisms that have a nucleus and other organelles |
Taxonomy | The field of biology that deals with identifying, naming, and classifying species and organisms |
Autotroph | An organism that can make its own food source ex: plants that do photosynthesis |
Heterotroph | An organism that must ingest food ex: humans eating food |
