Ingestion | To take food into the body ex: eating a hamburger |
Nutrition | The process by which organisms take in and utilize food material |
Transport | The absorption and movement of materials throughout an organism ex: food moving from the stomach to the intestines |
Synthesis | The combining of simple substances to form more complex substances ex: combining water, light, and energy to make sugars in plants |
Regulation | The response of an organism to a changing environment in order to maintain homeostasis ex: the human body releases sweat in the heat in order to cool the body to maintain a regular body temp. |
Digestion | The breaking down of food particles |
Respiration | A series of chemical reactions that release stored energy in nutrients ex: plants breaking down glucose to release energy |
Metabolism | The sum of all the life processes required to sustain life |
Excretion | The removal of metabolic waste ex: urinating |
Egestion | The removal of undigested foods |
Reproduction | The ability of an organism to produce more of its own kind/offspring |
Growth | The increase in size of an organism |
Homeostasis | The ability of an organism to maintain a constant stable internal environment |
