Producer | Organisms that make their own food from sunlight or thermal energy |
Consumer | Organisms that cannot make their own food so they must get it from other sources |
Primary Consumer | On a food chain these organisms would be the first ones to eat a producer |
Herbivore | Organisms that can only eat plants |
Photosynthesis | A process by which green plants turn sunlight energy into stored chemical energy |
Organic Compound | a compound in which the molecules contain Carbon linked to Hydrogen, Nitrogen or Oxygen |
Physical changes | Changes to an object that do not change it's chemical structures |
Chemical changes | Changes to an object as a result of chemical reactions like rust |
Element | A substance in which all the atoms are the same type |
Compound | A substance made of 2 or more different Elements chemically bonded |
Luster | A property of metals which allow them to become shiny |
Malleability | A property of metals which allows them to be pounded into thin sheets like aluminum foil |
Metalloid | A group of elements with properties of both Metals and Non-Metals |
Density | A value derived by taking an objects Mass and dividing it by its volume |
Grams | The unit in science for measuring Mass |
Liters | The unit in science for measuring Liquid volume |
Work | A force applied that moves an object in the direction of the applied force and is represented by the formula force x distance |
Potential Energy | Energy stored by position or shape like a rock at the top of a hill or an elastic band that is stretched |
Kinetic Energy | Energy of motion |
Speed | the sum total of distance traveled divided by the time it took |
Energy | The ability to do physical work represented by units called joules |
Thermal | The type of energy measured with a thermometer |
Inclined Plane | The scientific name for a ramp |
Line Graph | The type of graph used to show motion |
Force | A push or a pull that may cause acceleration |
Water shed | Areas of land that separate waters flowing to different rivers, basins or seas. |
Sinkhole | A cavity or empty space under ground caused by water erosion of limestone. |
Gravity | The force that holds all the planets & moons in their orbits |
Jupiter | The most massive planet in our Solar system |
Biodiversity | The variety of living things in an area |
Ecological Succession | The orderly way in which an ecosystem returns after it has been damaged or destroyed |
Pioneer Species | The first living things in an area that has been covered by lava |
Natural Selection | The elimination of certain unhelpful traits over time with out human interference |
Skin | The largest organ in the human body |
Circulatory system | The body system that moves blood throughout the body |
Homeostasis | The process of the Human body that maintains the bodies proper balance. |
Respiratory system | The body system responsible for gas exchange |
Budding | A type of asexual reproduction in which dots of the organism grow out and fall off |
Fission | A type of asexual reproduction in which an organism can be divided and the two separate pieces each become separate organisms |
Prokaryote | Single celled organisms in which the cell does not have a nucleus |
Mitochondria | The organelle in a cell responsible for converting stored chemical energy into energy for the cell |
Cytoplasm | The liquid in which cell organelles are suspended allowing them to move about the cell |
Cell Membrane | The phospholipid bilayer that surrounds a cell |
Vacuole | The cell organelle responsible for storing water in both plant and animal cells |
