Term | Definition |
Science | A process of observing, studying and thinking about things in the world to gain knowledge |
Variable | a factor in an experiment that can change |
Constant | variable that remains the same (does not change) |
Independent Variable | the variable that is purposely changed. It is the “if” part of the hypothesis, plotted on the X-axis of a graph |
Dependent Variable | the variable that is measured; the response, the results; the data; the “then” part of the hypothesis; plotted on the Y-Axis of a graph |
Control Group | the regular (standard) group to which everything is compared |
Experiemental Group | the group(s) being tested with the independent variable |
Repeated Trials | the number of times that experiment is repeated. |
Hypothesis | a educated guess or a testable. Written in an “if, then” format. |
Qualitative Observation | can be described, but not accurately measured. It does not involve numbers. |
Quantitative Observation | can be measured accurately and correctly with scientific tools. It involves numbers. |
Prediction | Use of knowledge to identify and explain observations or changes in advance |
Inference | The development of ideas based on observations |
Fact | An observation that has been repeatedly confirmed |
