Acute | short-term health effects |
ceiling | a concentration that should not be exceded by workers during an exposure period. Also called the Maximum Acceptable Ceiling |
Chronic | long-term health effects |
dose-response relationship | the connection between the amount (dose) and the effect (response) that a substance can have on the body |
Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) | an OSHA limit representing the maximum acceptable expsure of workers to a hazard over a specific period of time |
Routes of Entry | the ways in which a hazardous substance can enter the body, such as inhalation through the nose, absorption through the skin or eyes, accidental ingestion, or through injections |
Short-Term Exposure Limit (STEL) | a concentration to which workers can be exposed for a short term (e.g., 15 min) before suffering any harm |
Threshold Limit Value (TLV) | a limit set by the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygenists, representing the maximum acceptable exposure of workers to a hazard over a specific period of time |
Time Weighted Average (TWA) | an average concentration of a chemical or a noise level to which an employee can be exposed over an eight hour period, or 40 hours a week |
