Multicellular | Having or consisting of many cells or more than one cell |
prokaryotic | a single-celled organism that does not have a nucleus or membrane-bound organelles |
eukaryotic | an organism made up of cells that has a nucleus |
Autotroph | an organism that makes its own food |
Heterotroph | an organism that gets food by eating other organisms |
cell wall | a rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support to the cells |
cell membrane | a layer that covers the cell's surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell's environment |
sexual reproduction | reproduction in which the sex cells from two parents unite to produce offspring that shares traits form both parents |
asexual reproduction | type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single parent |
taxonomy | the science of describing, naming, and classifying organisms |
classification | the division of organisms into groups, or classes, based on specific characteristics |
dichotomous key | an aid that is used to identify organisms and that consists of the answers to a series of questions |
binomial nomenclature | system combines two names into one to give all species unique scientific names |
Protista | an organism that belongs to the kingdom protist |
Fungi | a kingdom made up of nongreen, eukaryotic organisms that have no means of movement, reproduce by using spores, and gt food by breaking down substances in their surroundings and absorbing the nutrients |
Plantae | a kingdom made up of complex, multi cellular organism that are usually green, have cell walls, cannot move around, and use the sun's energy to make sugar |
Animalia | a kingdom made up of complex, multi-cellular organisms that lack cell walls, can usually move around, and quickly respond to their environment |
Archaebacteria | in modern taxonomic system. a domain made up of prokaryotes that differ from other prokaryotes in makeup of their cell walls and in their genetics |
Eubacteria | a large group of bacteria having rigid cell walls; motile types have flagella |
Kingdom | is the third highest taxonomic rank, just below domain. Kingdoms are divided into smaller groups called phyla |
Genus | A taxonomic category ranking used in biological classification that is below a family and above a species level, and includes group(s) of species that are structurally similar or phylogenetically related |
Class | a taxonomic rank. Other well-known ranks in descending order of size are life, domain, kingdom, phylum, order, family, genus, and species, with class fitting between phylum and order |
Phylum | A taxonomic rank at the level below Kingdom and above Class in biological classification, especially of animals. (2) A group of Classes with similar distinctive characteristics |
Species | A group of closely related organisms that are very similar to each other and are usually capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring |
family | A taxonomic rank in the classification of organisms between genus and order |
order | a taxonomic rank used in the classification of organisms and recognized by the nomenclature codes. |
