Question | Answer |
what does the cell membrane do? | Encloses contents of cell and allows cytosol (water substance) to have different composition by allowing substances to move in and outside the cell. |
Is the cell wall semipermeable? | Yes, it allows some dissolved substances to move through it, but not others. |
What do the cell membrane's structures allow? | Larger particles to pass through it and allows movement against the concentration gradient and cytosol have different composition. |
What is the cell membrane made up of? | A double layer of phospholipids/bilayer of phospholipids. |
What are Phospholipids? | A major type of lipid (lipids - fats, oils or waxes). |
What are the two different processes that transport dissolved substances across the membrane? | Passive Transport and Active Transport. |
Does Passive Transport require energy? | No |
What is Diffusion? | The movement of molecules from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. Requires no energy |
What is Channel Meditated Diffusion? | When substances are to big to move across the membrane and are assisted by protein channels. Move from high to low and requires no energy? |
What is Carrier Mediated Diffusion? | When substances are required by cell but are to large to move across the membrane and are assisted by carrier molecules. Move from high to low and requires no energy. |
What is Active Transport? | When substances move across the membrane against the concentration gradient. This process does require energy. |
What are the 3 types of Passive Transport? | Diffusion, Channel mediated and Carrier Mediated. |
