Term | Definition |
Science | The study of the natural world through observations and logical reasoning. |
Pseudoscience | False science. Conclusions are not based on evidence. |
Hypothesis | A testable statement that predicts the outcome of the experiment. |
Experiment | A test to see if the hypothesis is correct. |
Test variable | The part of the experiment that the scientist changes. |
Outcome variable | The results of the experiment. What is affected by changes in the other variable. |
Observation | Information gathered by using your 5 senses. |
Inference | Using information to determine what happened in the past. |
Prediction | Using information to determine what will happen in the future. |
Data | The numbers and/or information collected during an experiment |
Repetition | When a scientist does his experiment again |
Replication | When OTHER scientists re-do an experiment |
Constant | A part of the experiment that does NOT change. It is the same for every group. |
Control group | The group that does NOT receive the test variable. |
Theory | A group of ideas that explain a process. Usually related to life or earth science. |
Law | A statement or equation that predicts an event. Usually related to physical science. |
Quantitative | Observation that is expressed in numbers |
Qualitative | An observation that describes something without numbers |
Objective reasoning | Reasoning based on facts and data |
Subjective reasoning | Reasoning based on opinions. This is NOT used in science. |
