What is a calorie? | A calorie is a unit of measurement for heat energy; measures the amount of energy available in food. |
How are calories measured in food? | By burning the food and measuring how much the heat increases the temperature of water. |
What is vital capacity? | The amount of air that a person can forcibly exhale after breathing in as much air as possible. |
What is total lung capacity? | The sum of vital capacity and residual volume. |
What is residual volume? | The air remaining in the lungs even after one forces as much air out as possible. |
What are factors that would affect a person’s vital capacity. | Age, sex, altitude, weather, temperature, athletic abilities, air pollution, cigarette smoking, and disorders such as asthma and emphysema. |
What is the process of cellular respiration? | Cellular respiration occurs in body cells and it is the process of creating ATP(energy) from the food that we eat. |
In cellular respiration, what are the two ingredients that are used and what are at least two products? | Cellular respiration uses glucose(sugar) and oxygen and it produces ATP(energy), carbon dioxide, and water |
What are the two main parts to the breathing process and the important structures and functions that are involved in each part? | One part is inhalation and the other part is exhalation. They both include the structures of the diaphragm muscle and the lungs. When the diaphragm does down, air is inhaled into the lungs and when the diaphragm raises up, air is exhaled from the lungs. |
