Question | Answer |
Draw and label the muscles and bones of a human arm that includes: the tendon, biceps, triceps, pivot joint, and hinge joint | See human arm diagrams from Lesson 10 and 11 student sheets (should be in your notebooks). |
What is a “ball-and-socket” joint and where in the body it can be found? | It is a joint that allows for movement in any direction and can be found in the shoulder or hips. |
What is a “hinge” joint and where in the body it can be found? | It is a joint that allows for movement to be back and forth in one direction and can be found at the elbow and knee. |
What are the characteristics of skeletal muscle and where in the body it can be found? | Has striated, tubular fibers that contract rapidly and is considered voluntary movement. It is found to be attached to the skeleton throughout the body. |
Describe at least three key characteristics of the skin. | The skin is the largest organ of the body and it is is able to keep water out, fluids in, has sensors to detect temperature and other information about the environment, protect the body from invaders, protect the other organs, and can repair itself. |
Describe the three different positions a person has to do in order to flex the biceps, triceps, and forearm muscles. | Biceps: Press your palms against the bottom of a desk or table. Triceps: Press your palms against the top of a desk or table. Forearm: Hold a book in front with both hands, squeezing as hard as you can. |
What are tendons and where can it be found in the human body? | Thin tissue that connects muscles to bones. Can be found where skeletal muscle is connecting to bone. |
What are ligaments and where can it be found in the human body? | Thick elastic band that connects bones together; can be found at the ends of two bones being joined together. |
What is cartilage and where can it be found in the human body? | Soft tissue at the end of bones that helps reduce friction between bones (keeps them from grinding together). Can be found between the ends of two bones where they meet. |
What is muscle fatigue and what causes it. | The muscles have ran out of energy, oxygen, and nutrients. The energy isn’t being produced fast enough and so the muscles are not able to continue to contract until more energy (and oxygen) is available. |
What are the ages when most bone growth occurs? | People start to build their skeleton between the ages of 10-18. |
What are the ages when bone loss starts to happen? | People start to lose bone in the middle ages and bone is lost dramatically around the ages of 65-70. |
How a person can build a strong skeleton? | A person can build a strong skeleton with exercise, such as running, walking, or weightlifting, and a healthy diet with lots of calcium and vitamin D. |
What are the characteristics of cardiac muscle and where in the body it can be found? | Has striated, branched fibers that contract rapidly and is considered involuntary movement. It is found in the walls of the heart. |
What are the characteristics of smooth muscle and where in the body it can be found? | Has nonstriated, spindle-shaped fibers that contract slowly and is considered involuntary movement. It is found in the walls of internal organs. |
