Term | Definition |
Observation | Made with the senses (sight, hearing, smell) and can be enhanced with the use of tools such as microscopes. |
Fact | A statement or piece of information that is true. Scientists determine what is true based on available evidence. |
Hypothesis | A testable explanation for observations and data. A good hypothesis is stated in such a way that it is clear what should be tested and measured. |
Scientific Law | Describes or summarizes observations, but does not explain them. A law may be int he form of a mathematical formula. |
Scientific Principle | A concept based on scientific laws and rules that are agreed upon by the scientific community. |
Scientific Theory | A explanation of a broad range of observations and provides a framework that scientists can use to analyze and make predictions about the natural world. |
Inference | A conclusion drawn from an observation. To infer means to 'make an inference'. |
