What is variation? | The genetic or environmental differences between organisms in a species. |
How do genes cause genetic variation? | • Characteristics determined by mix of genes inherited from mother and father • Passed on in gametes that develop offspring • Combination of genes from mother and father causes genetic variation- where no two types of the same species are similar |
In animals which characteristics are only determined by genes? | Eye colour, blood group and inherited disorders |
How can characteristics also be affected by the environment? | • Any difference in a species that has been caused by the condition they are living in is environmental variation |
Give an example of an environmental variation. | A plant receiving sunlight would grow better than a sun receiving less sunlight, the colour of and how much the plant grows is an environmental variation. |

Give an example of how environmental variation affects genetic variation. | The maximum height a person can grow to=genetic variation but environmental factors may affect how tall the person grows (food for example) |
