Question | Answer |
What are the four stages of the agar jelly experiment? | • Hot agar jelly is poured in to petri dish. • The jelly cools and sets and inoculating loops are used to infect the culture with microorganisms. • Paper covered with different types of anti-biotics. • Resistant strands continue to multiply. |
What is the purpose of the agar plate experiment? | To see how microorganisms react to different types of anti-biotics and disinfectants. |
What does the agar jelly contain? | The right amount of minerals, carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins for the microorganisms to grow. |
How is the inoculating loop sterilised? | It is passed through a flame. |
Why is it sterilised? | Because bacteria need to be killed so they don't contaminate the culture. |
Why does the petri dish have a lid on? | To stop air born microorganisms from contaminating the culture. |
Why are the cultures kept at 25 degrees? | Because the microorganisms grow best at this temperature. |
