Term | Definition |
balanced forces | forces on a object that combine to give a zero net force and do not change the motion or direction of the object. |
gravity | attractive force between two objects that depends on the masses of the objects and the distance between them. |
direction | with reference to the point or region toward which it is directed |
displacement | distance and direction of an object’s change in position from the starting point. |
electrical force | the net movement of electric charges in a single direction, |
force | a push or pull exerted on an object. |
friction | force that opposes the sliding motion between two touching surfaces. |
magnetic force | attraction or repulsion that arises between electrically charged particles because of their motion. |
mass | amount of matter in an object. |
motion | the action or process of moving or being moved. |
acceleration | rate of change of velocity; can be calculated by dividing the change in the velocity by the time it takes the change to occur. |
net force | sum of the forces that are acting on an object. |
speed | distance an object travels per unit of time. |
unbalanced force | forces on a object that combine to give a net force NOT equal to zero and changing the motion and/or direction of the object. |
weight | gravitational force exerted on an object. |
