adaptation | a structure or behavior that helps an organism survive |
mimicry | when one living thing imitates another in color or shape |
consumer | an organism that eats other organisms |
hibernation | to go into a deep sleep |
producer | an organism that makes its own food |
decomposer | an organism that breaks down dead plant and animal material into soil |
food chain | shows how energy passes from one organism to another in an ecosystem |
migrate | moving from one place to another |
climate | typical weather conditions in an area |
herbivore | a consumer that eats only plants |
omnivore | a consumer that eats both plants and animals |
food web | where food chains are linked together to show how energy is passed through an ecosystem |
ocean | the largest ecosystem; it covers 70-75% of the world |
wetlands | most of it's soil is covered by water; usually close to lakes, ponds, rivers |
tropical rainforest | hot and damp environment, many trees, has more kinds of living things than any other land ecosystem |
temperate forest | has different seasons, mainly located in North America, Europe, and Asia. |

blubber | a thick layer of fat under the skin |
shallow waters | where most ocean animals live |
