Term | Definition |
Mutation | any change in the sequence of the bases in DNA |
evolution | the process of changing over time |
natural selection | nature picks the best traits; more helpful traits become more frequent in a population when there are more offspring than resources |
fitness | the ability to survive to reproduce and pass on your genes |
analogous structures | body parts with similar function but not similar structure; they do not point to a recent commom ancestor |
homologous structures | body parts with similar structure that point to a commom ancestor |
stasis or genetic equillibrium | genetic stability, staying the same genetically |
punctuated equilibrium | short periods of rapid change |
mimicry | One species evolves traits to resemble another species |
recombination | an offspring's genetic information is a mix of the mother and father |
adaptation | an existing inheritable trait that allows an organism to better survive under current conditions |
vestigial structure | anatomic structure that no longer functions in modern organism but served a function in ancestor; it is evidence of evolution |
biogeography | study of where modern and ancestral organisms lived |
Molecular Record | comparing DNA, RNA, or proteins to identify # of differences in order to determine relatedness |
Molecular Clock | uses mutation rates in DNA to determine the amount of time that two species have been evolving independently |
