cerebellum | maintain balance and posture |
pons | relay between cerebellum and cerebral cortex AND spinal cord to cerebral cortex |
medulla oblongata | control heartbeat and breathing rate |
occipital lobe | includes the visual cortex |
parietal lobe | interprets sensory information coming from touch and pressure receptors in the skin |
frontal lobe | includes the primary motor cortex |
temporal lobe | processes auditory information |
hypothalamus | monitors body temperature and blood pressure |
corpus callosum | connects left and right hemispheres of the brain |
Broca's area on frontal lobe | enables the formation of spoken language |
Wernicke area on temporal lobe | enables comprehension when someone is speaking to you |
thalamus | relays sensory information (except smell) to the primary somatosensory cortex |
hindbrain | composed of medulla oblongata, pons and cerebellum |
forebrain | composed of thalamus, hypothalamus and cerebrum |
midbrain | minor role in humans (relay) |
