Term | Definition |
Matter | Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space |
Elements | Elements make up every substance |
Metals | Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity |
Non-Metals and Semimetals | Non-Metals are elements that do not conduct heat or electricity very well, Semi-metals are metals that are sometimes like metals and sometimes like non-metals |
Atoms | The smallest part of an element that still acts like one is an atom, atoms are made up of these particles, Protons, Neutrons, Electrons |
Atomic Arrangement | Atoms are often connected to other atoms in specific ways, the way the atoms are connected affects the properties of an element |
Compounds | A type of matter made of two or more elements, changing the number, kind, or position of atoms in a molecule changes it. |
Molecule | smallest particle of a compound that still acts like that compound |
Electron | Negative charge , around the neculeus |
Proton | Postitive charge, in the neculeus |
Neutron | No charge, in the neculues |
Solid | Has a definite volume or shape. Particles are very close together, and don’t move past each other. Keeps its shape. |
Liquid | Has a definite volume but not shape. Particles can move past each other. Takes shape of container |
Gas | No definite volume or shape. Particles spread out evenly and take shape of container. Can be squeezed into a smaller volume |
Plasma | Like a gas, but conducts electricity like a metal. Occurs with high temps or electric charge. |
Melting Point | Solid to liquid or liquid to solid. Same temperature as freezing point. |
Evaporation | When liquids become a gas |
Condesation | When gas becomes a liquid. Gas particles touch a cold surface and the temperature drops. |
BoilingPoint | he temperature at which evaporation occurs |
