kingdom | second largest taxa (or organizational level) includes Animalia, Plantea, fungi, protista, archeabacteria and eubacteria |
species | a group of similar living things that can reproduce and have fertile offspring |
scientific name | a two part name used by scientists, includes genus and species, helps to avoid confusion |
DNA | deoxyribonucleic acid, the blueprint for living things |
dichotomous key | tool used for identification, gives 2 choices |
classification | the act of organizing by similar characteristics |
domain | the largest division or taxa in organizing living things, include eukaryia, bacteria and archea |
phylogeny | the study of evolutionary history |
autotroph | makes its own food through photosynthesis or similar (aka producer) |
heterotroph | has to eat other things to live (aka consumer) |
eukaryote | has a cell or cells that contain a nucleus and other membrane bound organelles |
prokaryote | cells do not have nucleus, simpler cells |
unicellular | being made of 1 cell |
multicellular | being made of more that 1 cell |
biotic | living |
abiotic | nonliving |
binomial nomenclature | literally "2 word naming system" |
taxonomy | the science of naming and classifying organisms |
