abiotic factor | an environmental factor that is not associated with activities of living organisms |
acclimation | an organism's change in response to a change in the organism's environment |
biotic factor | an environmental factor that is associated with or results from the activities of living organisms |
conformer | organisms that do not regulate their internal conditions; they change with their external environment |
dormancy | a state in which seeds, spores, bulbs, and other reproductive organs stop growth and development and reduce their metabolism, especially respiration |
generalist | species with broad niches; can tolerate a range of conditions and use a variety of resources |
habitat | the place where an organism usually lives |
migration | in general, any movement of individuals or populations from one location to another; specifically, a periodic movement that is characteristic of a population or species |
niche | the unique position occupied by a species, both in terms of physical use of its habitat and its function within an ecological system |
regulator | organisms that use energy to control some of their internal conditions |
specialist | species that have narrow niches |
tolerance curve | a graph of the performance of an organism versus the value of an environmental variable |
