igneous | hot rocks/fire rocks |
igneous rock | defined by where they are formed: (Extrusive and Intrusive) and what they are made of:(Basaltic, Granitic, Andesitic) |
Magma | molten rock below the Earth's surface |
lava | molten rock above the Earth's surface |
Intrusive Igneous Rock | rocks formed from magma that cool slow and have large crystals Examples: Gabbro, Diorite, Granite |
Extrusive Igneous Rock | rocks formed from magma that cool fast and have small crystals Examples: Pumice, Obsidian, Basalt |
basaltic | an igneous rock that is high in Fe and Mg and low in SiO2 that is dark colored and high density. Found on the ocean floor and Hawaii |
Granitic | An Igneous rock that is high in SiO2 and low Fe and Mg that is light colored, low density, and found on the continents |
Andesitic | An igneous rock that is high in Fe and Mg, low in SiO2, that is grey colored, medium density, and found at the Pacific Rim |
