systematics | a process in which organisms are classified in terms of their natural relationship |
phylogenetics | the analysis of the evolutionary or ancestral relationships among taxa |
phylogenetic diagram | a branching diagram that shows how organisms are related through evolution |
cladistics | a phylogenetic classification system that uses shared derived characters and ancestry as the sole criterion for grouping taxa |
shared character | a feature that all members of a group have in common |
derived character | a feature that evolved only within the group under consideration |
clade | the group of organisms that includes an ancestor plus all of its descendants |
cladogram | a diagram that is based on patterns of shared, derived traits and that shows the evolutionary relationships between groups of organisms |
