agglutination | The clumping that occurs when antibodies of a blood type are combined with that blood type. |
anemia | A decrease in the oxygen carrying ability of the blood. |
antibodies | Proteins in the plasma of the blood that is made in response to the absence of the RBC antigen. |
antigens | Proteins that are located on the surface of red blood cells. |
coagulation | The clotting of blood. |
diapedesis | The action of white blood cells to move in and out of blood vessels. |
embolism | A thrombus that moves and blocks a blood vessel. |
erythrocytes | red blood cells |
erythropoietin | A hormone that controls the rate of erythrocyte production. |
fibrin | Protein fibers that form when blood clotting is necessary. |
hemocytoblast | The blood stem cell. Found in red bone marrow. |
hemoglobin | The substance that allows erythrocytes to carry oxygen. |
hemostasis | The stoppage of bleeding. |
leukemia | A disease of the white blood cells, that can originate in the bone marrow. |

Plasma | The fluid matrix of blood. It contains vitamins, water, wastes, etc. |
Platelets | Fragments of cells that are involved in blood clotting. |
Thrombus | A blood clot that develops in an unbroken blood vessel. |
