Part | Function |
Epidermis | Outermost later of protective tissue in leaves, roots, & stems. Layer of tough, irregularly shaped cells covered by waxy cuticle (prevents water loss). |
Cuticle | Waxy layer of cutie that covers plant epidermis (prevents water loss). |
Palisade mesophyll (middle) layer | Upper portion of the mesophyll that contains tightly packed cells w/ many chloroplasts to absorb light (a lot of photosynthesis happens here). |
Spongy mesophyll layer | Lower portion of the mesophyll that contains fewer loosely packed cells w/ chloroplasts. |
Stomate | Doorway in the lower epidermis that allows for gas exchange & loss of some water vapor. |
Guard cells (feedback mechanism) | Regulates the opening/closing of stomates & amount of gas exchange. |
Phloem | A tissue that takes the glucose in the leaf down to the rest of the plant. |
Xylem | Tissue that brings up water and minerals fro the roots to the leaf. |
Sepals | Leaf like structure found at the plants base (protects the flower bud before it blossoms). |
Petals | Surround the reproductive flower organs. |
Stamens | Male reproductive parts. |
Pistil | Female reproductive organ. |
Anther | Produces pollen. |
Filament | Stalk-like structure. |
Stigma | Enlarged area at the top that receives the pollen. |
Style | Supports the stigma. |
Ovary | Turns into a fruit, contains ovules which turn into seeds. |
