Community | Interaction of all the living things in an area. |
Organism | Living things like plants and animals. |
Population | Group of the same type of organism. |
Ecosystem | All the living things in an area and their habitat. |
Habitat | Physical place where an organism lives or its shelter. |
Biotic Factor | Living parts of an ecosystem. |
Abiotic Factor | Non-living parts of an ecosystem. |
Tundra | Located near the north and south poles. |
Temperate Forest | Deciduous (leaves) forest with medium rainfall. |
Grassland | Large flat area of land covered mostly with tall grass and few trees. |
Tropical Forest | Abundant rainfall and constant temperatures (rainforest). |
Desert | Little rainfall and extreme temperature changes. |
Aquatic | To live in the water instead of on the land or in the air. |
Freshwater | Streams, lakes, ponds, rivers, lakes, and marshes with low level salt content. |
Estuary | Place where fresh and salt water meet in a coastal area. |
Marine | Oceans and seas that have a very high salt content. |
Producer | Living things (plants) that make food. |
Consumer | Living things that eat food. |
Herbivore | Animals that eat only plants. |
Carnivore | Animals that eat only meat. |
Omnivore | Animals that eat both plants and meat. |
Decomposer | Organisms that break down dead plants or animals and return their nutrients to the soil. |
Predator | An animal that hunts another animal for food. |
Prey | Animal that is hunted by another animal. |
Food Chain | Path of energy from the sun, producer, consumer, and decomposer. |
Food Web | Model that shows several food chains linked together. |
Sun | Primary energy source in a food chain. |
Scavenger | An organism that feeds on dead organisms. |
Niche | The job an organism plays in a habitat. |
Competition | Contest between organisms for resources. |
Lake | Large body of fresh water surrounded by land. |
Pond | Small body of fresh water surrounded by land. |
Terrestrial | To live or grow on the land instead of the air or water. |
Energy Pyramid | Shows that less and less food and energy are available as you go from the base of the pyramid to the top. |
Flora | Plant life within an ecosystem. |
Fauna | Animal life within an ecosystem. |
Prairie | Grassland found mainly in the Midwestern United States |
Savannah | Grassland found mainly in Africa and Australia |
