Question | Answer |
Functions of Renal System | – Regulate body fluids – Filter metabolic wastes from the bloodstream – Reabsorb needed substances and water into the bloodstream – Eliminate metabolic wastes and water as urine – Formation of Urine |
Formation of urine | – Glomerular filtration - Hydrostatic and osmotic pressure - Normal GFR in adults is 120–125 mL/min |
Renal clearance | - Volume of plasma that is cleared of a particular substance in a given time (usually 1 minute) |
Serum creatinine | Produced when protein or muscle breaks down; a good indicator of kidney function. Creatinine does not increase until at least 50% of kidney function is lost, therefore any elevation is important and must be further assessed |
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) | Measures kidney excretion of urea nitrogen. Other factors aside from kidney disease elevate BUN. |
Renal system disorders | - Adult polycystic kidney disease (APKD) - Type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) - Bladder cancer |
Age-Related Renal System Changes | - Kidney atrophy - Decreased renal blood flow - Decrease in renal tubule function - Decrease in bladder capacity - Increases risk of hyponatremia and nocturia - Urinary incontinence is NOT a normal outcome of aging |
