Vocabulary | Definition |
catastrophic | relating to an event that brings terrible loss or lasting distress |
eruption | the process of releasing something with violence |
force | a push or a pull exerted on an object |
pressure | the force that something exerts over a given area |
equilibrium | a state in which opposing forces in a system are equally balanced or stable |
natural hazard | an event that results from Earth processes and that can cause damage and endanger human life |
hurricane | a severe tropical cyclone usually with heavy rains and winds moving at 74 mph or faster |
landslide | rock and soil slide quickly down a slope |
mudslide | rapid downhill movement of a mixture of water, rock, and soil |
tornado | a rotating column of air spinning at destructively high speeds, usually accompanied by a funnel - shaped down ward extension of a cloud |
tsunami | a very large ocean wave caused by an underwater earthquake or volcanic eruption |
drought | a long period of abnormally low rainfall, especially one that adversely affects growing or living conditions |
flood | an overflowing of water onto land that is normally dry |
earthquake | a sudden movement of the earth's crust caused by the release of stress accumulated along geologic faults or by volcanic activity |
wildfire | a raging, rapidly spreading fire |
storm surge | water that is pushed shore by the force of the winds swirling around the storm |
hurricane warning | hurricane conditions are likely for a location within 24 hours |
hurricane watch | hurricane conditions are likely for a location within 36 hours |
