Scientific Method | A systematic approach used in scientific study that typically includes observation, a hypothesis, experiments, data analysis, and a conclusion |
Observation | Any use of the senses to gather information |
Hypothesis | A scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested in ways that support or reject it. |
Controlled Experiment | A test of the effect of a single variable by changing it while keeping all variables the same. |
Analysis | A detailed examination of the elements or structure of something. |
Conclusion | What did we learn? |
Data | Facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations. |
Accuarcy | An indication of how close a measurement is to the true value |
Precision | Describes the closeness, or reproducibility, of a set of measurements taken under the same conditions. |
Quantitative Data | Data that is represented by measurements or counting. |
Qualitative Data | Information describing color, odor, shape, or some other physical characteristic |
Dependent Variable | The outcome factor; the variable that may change in response to manipulations of the independent variable. |
Independent Variable | The experimental factor that is manipulated--the variable whose effect is being studied |
Inference | A logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experience. |
Graph | A diagram that shows how two variables are related. |
