Term | Definition |
phagocytes | scavengers, remove dead cells and invasive microorganisms |
neutrophils | travel throughout body, squeezes through the walls of capillaries to patrol the tissues, short lived cells but come in large numbers during infection. |
macrophages | larger than neutrophils and found in organs. |
monocytes | marcrophages in blood. |
lymphocytes size | smaller than phagocytes, large nucleus fills most of the cells |
B- lymphocytes | in bone marrow till mature, spread throughout body, concentrating in lymph nodes and spleen |
T- lymphocytes | collects in thymus |
primary response | slow because very B cells specific to antigen |
secondary response | faster because memory cells, more antibodies |
antibodies | globular glycoprotein and form plasma proteins (immunoglobulins) |
antitoxins | block the toxins released by bacteria |
vaccine | a preparation containing antigens which is used to stimulate an immune response artificially. |
passive immunity | people did not produce the anitbodies |
natural active immunity | activation occurs naturally during an infection |
