Term | Definition |
Lung Cancer | Caused by uncontrolled invasive growth of abnormal cells in the lungs. Caused by a carcinoma or malignant tumor that grows and multiplies which causes abnormal cells to spread to healthy tissue. |
Carcinogen | Cancer causing agent. |
Pneumonia | Occurs when the alveoli fill with a thick fluid making gas exchange difficult. Infection by bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. |
Mycoplasm Pneumonia | Caused by mycoplasms which are the smallest free-living causes of disease in humans. |
Obstructive Respiratory Disorders | Disorders where the air does not flow freely in the airways. The amount of time to inhale or exhale is greatly decreased. |
Asthma | Airways are inflamed due to irritations and bronchioles constrict due to muscle spasms. Symptoms usually appear as "______ attacks". |
An Asthma Attack | 1. The airway swells 2. The bronchial muscles tighten 3. Increased amounts of mucus are secreted into the airways. |
Chronic Bronchitis | When the airways are inflamed due to infection or an irritant. Airways are filled with mucus and coughing brings up mucus and pus. Smoking is the most common cause. |
Emphysema | Alveoli burst and fuse into enlarged air spaces. The walls of the alveoli are so damaged that the surface for gas exchange is greatly reduced and less O2 is available to the body. The elasticity is also decreased. Incurable. |
