Term | Definition |
Chromosome | Tightly coiled, compact strands of DNA. Cannot read the instructions but can move the strand easily. |
Gene | A section of DNA that codes for a specific protein/trait |
Chromatin | Long loose strands of DNA that can be used/read to build proteins. |
DNA | Instructions for building proteins. A polymer made of monomer nucleotides. The sequence of nitrogen bases on the nucleotides make the code. |
Sister Chromatids | When the DNA has been copied and is still attached to the replicated copy by a centromere. |
Homologous Chromosomes | Two strands of DNA that have the same genes on them One comes from the mother and one comes from the father. |
Tetrads | When the homologous chromosomes are paired together and they are still attached to their replicated copy |
Meiosis | Process that produces gametes with half the number of chromosomes as the parent. Needed so offspring can have same amount of DNA as parent. |
Diploid | Two of each kind of chromosome (2N) |
Haploid | One of each kind of chromosome (N) |
Gamete | A haploid sex cell. (Egg for girls and sperm for boys.) |
Fertilization | The joining of two haploid sex cells |
Zygote | The diploid cell that results from the joining of gametes |
Sexual Reproduction | The type of reproduction that joins 2 haploid gametes to make a genetically new individual (offspring) |
