Hybrid | An offspring that was given different genetic info for a trait from each parent. |
Dominant | Describes a trait that covers over or dominates another form of that trait. |
Recessive | Describes a trait that is covered over or dominated by another form of that trait and seems to disappear. |
Punnett Square | A tool used to predict the probability of certain traits in offspring that shows the different ways alleles can combine. |
Genotype | The genetic makeup of an organism. |
Phenotype | The outward physical appearance and behavior of an organism as of a result of its genotype. |
Homozygous | Describes an organism with two alleles that are the same for a trait. |
Heterozygous | Describes an organism with two different alleles for a trait. |
Trait | A trait is characteristics or at tribute of an organism that is expressed by genes or influenced by the environment. |
Genetic Engineering | The application of scientific methods, procedures, and technologies that permit direct manipulation of genetic material. |
Sex-Linked Gene | A gene located on a sex chromosome, usually the X-chromosome. |
Polygenic Inheritance | Heredity of complex characters that are determined by a large number of genes, each one usually having a small effect. |
