Term | Definition |
Mosses and Relatives | Have no roots. Instead have small root-like structures called rhizoids. Grow in mats of low, tangled vegetation that can hold water like a sponge. |
Bryophytes | Common in moist, shady areas. Sphnagum moss is valuable as it is highly water absorbent and nutrient rich (peat moss). |
Ferns and Relatives | Have vascular tissue. Grow taller and live in a wider range of habitats compared to mosses. Whisk fern, club mosses, horsetails. |
Cone-bearing Plants | They have roots, stems and leaves. They have seeds exposed on the surface of cones. |
Angiosperms | Grow and develop seeds that are enclosed within a fruit. Trees, shrubs, grasses, etc. |
Pistil | Female reproductive organ. |
Pollination Adaptation | Most methods involve birds, insects, bats, etc. Colour, shape and scent of the flower helps the pollinator recognise the source of food. |
Self-Pollination | Produces genetically identical offspring. |
Seed Structure | The hard case of the seed allows the embryo inside to survive adverse conditions such as dry & hot conditions. |
