Term | Definition |
Physics | a major science dealing with the fundamental constituents of the universe, the forces they exert on one another, and the results produced by these forces |
Force | a push or pull on an object or substance that may or may not produce a change |
Speed | the rate of change in the position of an object or how fast an object is moving |
Velocity | speed with direction of movement specified or the rate at which an object changes its position |
Scalar quantity | a quantity that describes magnitude |
Net force | all the forces on an object added together |
Unbalanced forces | when there is a net force other than zero – movement takes place |
Balanced forces | when the net force is zero – no movement takes place |
Centripetal Force | a center seeking force that causes an object to move in a circular path |
Displacement | a vector quantity that refers to how far out of place an object ends up; it is the object's change in position |
Distance | scalar quantity which refers to how much ground an object has covered during its motion |
Vector quantity | a quantity that tells both magnitude and direction |
