Evaporation | Vaporization that occurs at the surface of a liquid. |
Boiling | Vaporization that occurs on and below the surface of a liquid. |
Boiling Point | The temperature at which a liquid substance boils. |
Condensation | The change from gaseous form to liquid forms of a substance. |
Thermal Expansion | The expansion, or increase of size, of matter when it is heated. |
Thermostat | A device that regulates temperature. |
Sublimation | The change from solids to a gaseous state of a substance. |
Heat | Thermal energy that is transferred from one substance to another. |
Conduction | The transfer of heat between its particles within a substance. |
Convection | The transfer of heat by the movement of currents within a fluid. |
Convection Current | A current caused by the rising of heated fluids and the sinking of cooled fluids. |
Radiation | The transfer of energy caused by electromagnetic waves. |

Conductor | A material that easily transfers heat between its particles. |
Insulator | A material that does not easily transfer heat between its particles. |
Specific Heat | The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram by one kelvin. |
Examples of Conductors | Silver, Stainless Steel, Iron, Gold (Metals) |
Examples of Insulators | Wood, Wool, Cork, Straw, Air, Gasses, Paper, Down Feathers, Fiberglass |
Temperature | The measure of the average amount of kinetic energy of the particles of a substance. |
Fahrenheit Scale | The scale that states that 32 is the temperature at which water freezes and 212 is the temperature at which water boils. |
Celsius Scale | The scale that states 0 is the temperature at which water freezes and 100 is the temperature at which water boils. |
Kelvin Scale | The scale that states 0 is the temperature that no more energy can be removed from matter. |
Absolute Zero | The temperature at which no more energy can be removed from matter. |
Thermal Energy | The total amount of energy in the particles of a substance. |
