Term | Definition |
Pharynx | a tubelike passageway for food, liquid and air. |
trachea | airway that is lined with rings of cartilage and cilia and contains the voice box. |
larynx | another name for your voice box, contains two flaps of tissue that vibrate and produce sound. |
bronchi | two tube that branch off of the trachea and into the lungs |
alveoli | tiny sacs at the end of the bronchioles where gas exchange takes place. |
diaphragm | large dome shaped muscle beneath your lungs that contracts and relaxes to move gases into and out of your lungs. |
emphysema | disease in which the alveoli in the lungs enlarge |
asthma | a respiratory disorder in which the bronchial tubes contract causing shortness of breath and wheezing. |
cellular respiration | process that uses oxygen and glucose to make energy in cells. |
