Term | Definition |
cell cycle | life span of a cell. Begins when a cell is formed and ends when the cell divide to form a new cell. |
DNA | the hereditary material that controls all cell activities including the making of new cells. |
chromosome | DNA in a cell is organized into these. Copying chromosomes in cell division ensures an exact copy of the parent. |
binary fission | cell division in bacteria or prokaryotic single celled organisms. |
Homologous chromosomes | Chromosomes that have the same sequence of genes and the same structure. Lined up in pairs. |
Phases of Eukaryotic Multicellular Cell Cyle | Interphase, Mitosis, and Cells split into to two cells |
chromatids | During interphase, the cell grows and copies its organelles and chromosomes. The two copies are known as this |
Centromere | Chromatids are held together at this region. |
Mitosis | in eukaryotic multicellular cells, a process of cell division that forms two new nuclei each which has the same number of chromosomes |
Four Stages of Mitosis (not including Interphase and Cytokinesis) | Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase |
Cytokinesis | the division of the cytoplasm of a cell |
