Question | Answer |
arteries | blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart |
veins | blood vessels that carry blood to the heart |
pulmonary circulation | the flow of blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart |
sinotrial node | natural pacemaker; controls the beating rhythm of the heart |
pericardium | double-walled sac that surrounds and protects the heart |
aorta | major artery at the top of the heart |
venea cavas | veins to the heart |
normal blood pressure for an adult | 120/80 |
cardiac tissue | makes up the majority of the heart |
connective tissue | makes up the veins and arteries; blood vessels |
life of platelets | 5-10 days |
plasma | liquid part of the blood |
red blood cells | carries oxygen (O) to all the cells in the body |
platelets | help to create blood clots to prevent blood loss; scabs |
white blood cells | fight infection; most made in the bone marrow, but some made in the spleen, thymus and lymph nodes |
artherosclerosis | cholesterol build up in the vessels resulting in blockage of the pathway |
hypertension | high blood pressure |
heart attack | when heart muscle cells die and the heart muscle is damaged |
heart failure | heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the oxygen needs of the body |
stroke | when blood vessels in the brain are blocked/clogged or rupture |
hemoglobin | protein attached to red blood cells (RBCs), gives them their bright red color |
universal donor | O, has no antigens that cause immune system to react |
universal acceptor | AB, does not see antigens as foreign "invaders" |
lymphatic system | group of organs and tissues that collect excess fluid and returns it to your body |
lymphocytes | white blood cells (WBCs) that fight pathogens/infection |
lymph nodes | small organs in the lymphatic system that are found in the armpit, neck and groin and throughout the body; lymph is filtered and lymphocytes are formed |
spleen | largest lymphatic organ; destroys old red blood cells, produces lymphocytes; found on the left side of the abdomen |
thymus | organ of the lymphatic system, found behind the sternum above the heart ; T-cells/T-lymphocytes mature (originate in bone marrow) |
tonsils | organs of the lymphatic system, found in back of mouth, trap pathogens that enter the throat |
T - cells | lymphocyte produced in the thymus, important in the immune system to fight pathogens |
lymph capillaries | carry lymph into the large neck veins of the cardiovascular system |
