Molecule | a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction. |
Chemical Bond | a strong force of attraction holding atoms together in a molecule or crystal, resulting from the sharing or transfer of electrons. |
Chemical Formula | a set of chemical symbols showing the elements present in a compound and their relative proportions, and in some cases the structure of the compound. |
Compound | a substance that is composed of two or more separate elements |
Element | each of more than one hundred substances that cannot be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances and are primary constituents of matter. |
Chemical Reaction | a process that involves rearrangement of the molecular or ionic structure of a substance, as opposed to a change in physical form or a nuclear reaction. |
Reactant | a substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction. |
Product | A new material formed in a chemical reaction |
Open System | mass is CONSERVED inside the system but energy enters and leaves the system freely. |
Closed System | a system that can EXCHANGE energy (as heat or work) but not matter, with its surroundings. |
