molecule | A group of atoms bonded together |
chemical bond | A chemical reaction between two atoms. |
chemical formula | The formula used to identify an element. |
compound | A substance that is produced from two or more atoms. |
element | What is combined to make different elements or products. |
chemical reaction | When two substances combine to make a new element. |
reactant | A chemical or substance that changes during a chemical bond to make a new product. |
product | A new substance that is formed after a chemical reaction. |
open system | A system where energy can be gained or lost in an environment. |
closed system | A physical system that does not allow certain types of transfers (such as transfer of mass) in or out of the system. |
Law of Conservation of Mass | For any system closed to all transfers of matter and energy, the mass of the system must remain constant over time, as system mass cannot change quantity if it is not added or removed. |
