periosteum | tough fitting outer membrane found on bones |
ligament | tough band of tissue that holds bones together |
marrow | found in the inside of some long bones, makes blood cells |
immovable | type of joint found in the skull |
gliding | type of joint found in the spine |
ball and socket | type of joint found in the shoulder and hip |
pivot | type of joint found in the neck |
hinge | type of joint found in the elbow and knee |
cartilage | smooth slippery, thick layer of tissue found on the ends of bones |
joint | place where two or more bones come together |
muscle | organ that can contract, relax and provide force to move your body. |
voluntary muscle | muscle that you can control. |
involuntary muscle | muscles you can't consciously control. |
skeletal muscles | muscles that move bones |
tendons | thick bands of tissue that attach muscles to bones |
cardiac muscle | striated muscle that is only found in the heart. |
smooth muscle | muscles found in the intestines, bladder, blood vessels and other internal organs. |
epidermis | outer, thinnest layer of the skin |
dermis | layer of skin below the epidermis and contains blood vessels, nerves, muscles, oil and sweat glands. |
melanin | a pigment that protects your skin and gives it color. |
vitamin D | helps the body absorb calcium from the blood and is produce by the skin. |
bruise | tiny blood vessels burst under the skin and blood leaks into the surrounding area. |
sweat gland | regulates body temperature and gets rid of waste. |
