Term | Definition |
Absolute Location | The exact spot where something is located, usually its latitude and longitude. |
Cardinal Directions | Located on the compass rose, they are North ,South , East, and West. |
Climate | Weather patterns in an area usually experienced over a long period of time. |
Compass Rose | A navigational instrument; may include cardinal and intermediate directions |
Continent | One of the seven large landmasses of the earth. |
Distortion | A change in the accuracy of shapes, direction, or distances shown on maps. |

Equator | An imaginary latitude line located between the north and south poles at 0 degrees. |
Geography | The study of Earth and the people who live on it and how they use it. |
Hemispheres | Half of the Earth; there are four |
Intermediate Directions | Northeast; Southeast; Northwest;Southwest |
Key/Legend | The section of a map that explains the symbols for the map features |
Latitude/Parallel | Imaginary lines that go from east to west and are parallel to the equator. Line go east to west but measure north and south. |
Longitude/Meridian | Imaginary lines that run from the north pole to the south pole . Line go north to south but measure east and west. |
Prime Meridian | Imaginary line of longitude that runs from the north pole to the south pole at 0* |
Region | Areas that share similar characteristics |
Relative location | The approximate spot where something is located, usually compared to other places |
Scale | The size of an area on a map as compared with the area's actual size |
Tropic of Cancer | Imaginary line at 23.5 degrees north of the equator |
Tropic of Capricorn | Imaginary line at 23.5 degrees south of the equator |
Arctic Circle | 66.5 degrees north of the equator |
Antarctic Circle | 66.5 degrees south of the equator |
Place | An area that is defined by everything in it |
Movement | The way that people, products, information and ideas move from place to place |
Human - Environment Interaction | How people adapt to their environment and how they change it |

Axis | Vertical and horizontal lines on a graph |
Grid System | Network of lines that form latitude and longitude |
GIS | Computer software use to make maps |
Physical Map | Shows landform and water features |
Political Map | Shows names and boundaries of countries |
North Pole | 90 degrees north |
South Pole | 90 degrees south |
Great Circle Route | Geographers use this to show the shortest distance between to places. |
Contour Map | This map is used to show elevation |
Population Density | Average number of people living in a square mile |
