Term | Definition |
Weight | The measure of the gravitational force on an object. |
Element | This is made up of one or more of the same kind of atom chemically combined. |
Mixture | Contains a variety of elements and compounds that are not chemically combines with each other. |
Compound | Made up of different kinds of atoms chemically combined. |
Electron | A subatomic particle that has a negative charge. (-) |
Chemical Symbol | A one, two, or three letter abbreviation of the name of an element. Examples Ca, O, and N. |
Proton | Subatomic particle that has a positive charge and is located in the nucleus of the atom. (+) |
Neutron | A subatomic particle that has no charge. |
Atomic Number | The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. This is the same number for all atoms of an element. |
Pure Substance | A sample of matter, either a single element of a single compound, that has a definite chemical and physical properties. |
Atom | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element. The building block of matter |
Density | The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of a substance. D=M/V |
Mass | It describes the amount of matter in an object. |
Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
Physical Property | A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. Types are density, conductivity, solubility, malleability, magnetic, melting points, hardness. |
Volume | The amount of space that an object takes up, or occupies. V=M/D or V=lwh |
Chemical Property | A characteristic that describes a substance's ability to change into a new substance with different properties. Types include flammability, reactivity with other substances, ability to ruse. |
