competition | both species (or organisms within one species) need to use the same, limited resource. Negative-Negative |
predation | one species (predator) hunts and kills another (prey) for food. Positive-Negative |
herbivory | one species eats part or all of a plant species. Positive-Negative |
parasitism | one species makes its living off of another species. Positive-Negative |
commensalism | One species benefits from the interaction, but the other species is not affected Positive-Neutral |

niche | an organism's "job" in the environment: what it eats, where it lives, what it does, how it interacts, etc. |
schooling | behavior by some animals in which a large group moves together; thought to distract predators |
primary succession | sequence of communities that develops in an area starting as bare rock, with no soil yet. |
secondary succession | sequence of communities that develops after a disturbance wipes out part of the ecosystem, but some soil and other traces remain |
exotic species | a species that is not native to the area, but has been introduced from another area |
invasive species | a non-native species that does harm to the ecosystem |
