Body Cavity | Structures within cavity |
Dorsal body cavity | Head / back - Broken down into Cranial cavity and the vertebral canal. |
Cranial cavity | Cavity that houses the brain. |
Vertebral canal | Contains the spinal cord. |
Ventral Cavity | Chest / Gut - Divided by the diaphram, into a superior Thoracic cavity and an inferior abdominopelvic cavity. |
Thoracic Cavity | Protected by the rib cage and contains the heart and lungs. |
Abdominopelvic Cavity | Subdivided into a superior Abdominal cavity and an inferior pelvic cavity, but there is no structural separation between them. |
Abdominal Cavity | Contains the stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, and kidneys. |
Pelvic Cavity | Contains the urinary bladder, sigmoid colon, rectum, and internal reproductive organs. |
