| Term | Definition |
| Plastic Print | Formed by an imprint into a soft material such as wax or clay; a 3D impression. |
| Visible Print | A print in a colored material such as blood or ink. |
| Latent Print | An invisible print found on any surface (window, desk, etc) that must be developed in order to study it. |
| Dusting | A way to develop latent prints that uses a fine powder on a hard, nonabsorbent surface. Prints are then lifted using clear sticky tape. |
| Iodine Fuming | A way to develop latent prints where crystals react with the fatty oils in the finger to form short lasting golden brown print. Works best on soft porous surfaces like paper. |
| Ninhydrin | A way to develop latent prints that reacts with the amino acids left by the finger to form a orange to purple image. Works best on porous surfaces like paper. |
| Silver Nitrate | A way to develop latent prints that reacts with the salt left from perspiration in the same way that photographs are developed. |
